The global cacao industry faces serious challenges. Most cacao is sourced unsustainably and unethically, often linked to deforestation, poverty and human rights violations such as child labour and forced labour. In West Africa, which produces 70 percent of the world’s cocoa, farmers earn less than one dollar a day, and illegal deforestation has destroyed up to 90 percent of rainforests in some regions.
